With all the chaos Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have left behind, we considered canceling our January 2006 weekend. After prayer and sharing ideas, we have decided that we NEED our annual weekend more than ever. We hope that you agree and will be able to get away and join us.

Dealing with addiction is like being in a hurricane.  Terrified while it is raging, we desperately want to live through it and to have our lives be like they were before.  They never will be.  However, if we knock on God’s door, or respond to God’s knock on our own door, God can and will redeem our suffering and teach us how to live into our new lives.

We take Steps 1, 2, and 3, the give-up steps, when we realize that we have lost our way and our lives have become unmanageable.  We thought we were sure footed, but we have slipped into a way of life that is robbing us of our vitality, our freedom, our capacity to love.   Although filled with fear and anxiety, we are ready to give our lives over to God.  Once we do that, we begin our path to freedom.  We have a steadying presence that will bring us back to sanity and let us claim the power that is truly ours and let go of our delusions of having power we can never have – power over alcohol, drugs, other people or whatever it is that enslaves us.  When we knock, God welcomes us with open arms.  God helps us regain our sanity and helps us to become whole.  We begin to know happiness.

Eileen Mitchell has been in recovery for 14 years.  She has led several retreats including the Women’s Addiction Recovery Retreat.  She is a trained spiritual director and a graduate of the School for Ministry of the Diocese of Louisiana and of Education for Ministry.  She is active in her parish, All Saints’ in River Ridge and in the diocese.

The Addictions Recovery Ministry (ARM) of the Episcopal Church helps recovering Christians to find a home within the Church. ARM seeks to provide education, guidance and support for families struggling with, or wishing to learn more about addictions. Our desire is not to be dogmatic or exclude anyone in their spiritual search, but to live out the acceptance and love taught by Jesus.
